Dr. Bob Layman has been the American Optometric Association President from June 2021 through June 2022. From his upbringing in Toledo OH to his practice career there, Bob shares thoughtful stories of his upbringing as well as his mentors. What's amazed me about Bob's career is his longstanding commitment to volunteering for the AOA - which he has done for about four decades!
He is passionate about optometry volunteerism, as well as serving as a mentor to young people who are building an interest in optometry. He tells stories about the power of contributing to this community as a Scoutmaster, as well as the hobby that keeps him sane.
This Sandbox Story interview is the first one done with a sitting President of the AOA, and some of his best views are shared about how optometry must be politically thoughtful and mindful to stay successful. Most importantly, Bob’s true humility and drive toward service shines through.
